MACGARVEY THOMPSON
Owner of Mac's Restaurant & CBA Lifetime Achievement Award
Chef Macgarvey Thompson is the co-owner of the well-known Mac’s Restaurant Ltd., along with his wife Dr. Arlene Smith-Thompson, who is an educator by profession. Their restaurant is located in the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park on Wickham’s Cay in the British Virgin Islands.
Mr. Thompson or Chef Mac as he is popularly called, is no stranger to the culinary industry,
having been a member of several international award-winning national teams for the British Virgin Islands for several years.
Though professionally trained in pastry-making, Chef Mac’s culinary skills are quite versatile as he can also cook a variety of cuisines at a very high standard. As a result of his professional capabilities, Chef Mac’s skills are always in demand. Locally he has conducted several culinary training programmes for young people at his restaurant and has also taught basic cooking and baking skills at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in the past. Chef Mac has also offered his services in the US Virgin Islands to the My Brother’s Workshop Organization providing culinary training to young people with special educational needs.
Chef Mac is a graduate of the world-famous Le Cordon Bleu Institute. Upon graduation, he was offered immediate employment at the Fontainbleau Hotel in Miami as a pastry chef. He also worked at Extravaganza Pastry and Café before returning to the Virgin Islands to assume the position of Assistant Manager of the then Road Town Bakery at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. Ten years ago, Chef Mac became the owner of the college’s bakeshop operations and has expanded it to a thriving operation today in its current location at the Tortola Pier Park.
Chef Mac’s passion is to see a younger generation of Virgin Islands chefs being trained in order to ensure that certain aspects of the country’s culinary culture are not lost in the future.
